GORE-TEX® Products Good For Life Scholarship

The GORE-TEX® products Good For Life Scholarship was first introduced in 2001 by the team from Adventure Philosophy. Each year it provides funding and outdoor products to help young New Zealanders pursue their ultimate outdoor adventure. The 2006 winners are:

Schools category — Tom Williams

Tom Williams won the school scholarship with an ambitious solo expedition tackling the length of the South Island on foot and by bike. The 18 year-old’s 1300 kilometre journey started on 10 December 2006 from Invercargill and finished some 23 days later at the tip of the world’s longest sandbar, Farewell Spit.

But for Tom the real challenge started many years ago when at the age of four he survived a life-threatening brain tumour. Tom hopes his epic adventure will inspire New Zealanders to get out there and pursue the things they really love, regardless of the obstacles.

Tertiary category — Megan Lowen & Bridget Keegan

Fitness fanatics Megan Lowen and Bridget Keegan won the tertiary scholarship with a 550 kilometre multi-disciplinary odyssey taking in Taranaki, Ruapehu, and the terrain in between.

Starting on 6 January 2007 near Inglewood, the University of Otago students kicked-off their journey with a challenging 150km road ride around Mt Egmont before trading in their bikes for tramping boots and later canoes and kayaks. Their successful expedition came to an end two weeks later on the shores of Lake Taupo.

Open category — Claire Berthelsen & Tineke Berthelsen

Sisters Claire and Tineke Berthelsen won the open scholarship with their plan to set sail in their 16-foot hobie cat on a 550km journey from Waipu Cove to Tauranga in November 2007.

The aim of the Berthelsen’s trip is to raise awareness of the value of New Zealand’s marine eco-systems, a subject that both girls are passionate about. Claire and Tineke are no strangers to the ocean having lived aboard a 48-foot catamaran for three years sailing around the Pacific as children. This experience has had a huge influence on their lives and both girls credit it for their love of adventure.
