When that southerly blows in, you need to be ready

“We go mountain biking about four hours south of Sydney. We take a turn just after Nowra and then drive on a dirt road for about 40kms to our first night camp. The next day is on the bikes to go further into the bush. We drop the gear about 20kms in and then go for a spin before camping the night. It is so remote; you see no one for the whole weekend apart from a few black snakes. There’s also no phone coverage but you’re always a few hours from the car.

The day in question started off fine; the sun was up, there was a bit of a breeze but more refreshing than cold. Then when we got back to camp it started to get hairy. We were going to explore some aboriginal rock formations but before we took off the wind started to pick up and the rain came down. I put everything I had in my bag on, including my GORE-TEX® jacket. We managed to get the gas fire going to cook some food but then the weather got worse. A full-on storm blew in and it was just about as extreme as I’ve experienced. Without the GORE-TEX® jacket I don’t if it would have been easy. In fact one of the guys didn’t have one and he had a terrible night. He has one now.”
