ABOUT COMFORT
CLOTHING SYSTEMS
BASE LAYER

The base layer is worn directly next to the skin. Its role is to wick away liquid moisture to prevent you from feeling clammy and cold. This layer must be protected from external elements, otherwise moisture can seep back into the clothing system.

Good wicking fabrics: non-absorbent synthetic fibres that insulate while wicking liquid away from your skin. Cotton is never a good choice as it tends hold moisture.

Don't confuse wicking with 'breathability'. Wicking clothes physically move liquid moisture away from your body, whereas breathable outerwear allows moisture vapour to escape out through the fabric. Both work to keep you dry, but in different ways.
